Top 5 Things to do in Tralee in December!

With the festive season upon us, you may be wondering what fun and activities Tralee can provide us with this year. To save you time doing the research and endless scrolling through Facebook, we here at The Grand have compiled the Top 5 Things to do in Tralee this December!

5. The Festive Hall at Tralee Museum, Denny Street

Just a stone’s throw away from our own front doors, this year’s Festive Hall at Tralee Museum is set to be the most festive yet! Pay it a visit for a delightful, fun-filled experience the whole family will enjoy. A host of cheery characters will come to life from Christmas tales old and new, to take you on an enchanting tour of the magical hall. There will be lots of fun and games on your way to meet the main man himself, Mr Santa Claus. And Santa, of course, will have a little gift for every child that comes to see him and likes nothing better than posing for photos with his visitors.

4. Tralee 5KM Santa Fun Run at Tralee Wetlands

A fun, active and festive activity that’s fun for all ages, the annual Santa Run will be taking place on Sunday 15th December at 11am! Now in its sixth year this event has gone from strength to strength as families get into the Christmas spirit by coming out to participate, support and enjoy this yearly colourful display. The event, which is organised in memory of Fiona Moore raises much needed funds for deserving children’s charities. To date the proceeds have gone to Make a Wish Foundation, Heart Children Ireland, Ronald McDonald House, Barretstown and Kerry University Hospital. This year, the chosen charity for the Tralee Santa Fun Run is Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, where each year hundreds of children are treated for serious medical conditions.

3. Abba Forever – The Christmas Show at Siamsa Tire

Whether we admit it or not, we all love a bit of Abba, especially at Christmas and this show is the best way to really kick off your Christmas celebrations! It’s always party time when ABBA is about, but when it’s the Christmas Show, then that’s a real excuse for a party! This happy sing-a-long tribute, celebrates with a loud and proud fanfare, so we all better start brushing up on our Abba lyrics!

2. New Year’s Eve Party & Fireworks on Denny Street

Again, an event that’s happening on our very doorstep, the Denny Street New Year’s Eve party is always a big hit! UV5, one of Ireland’s premier high-energy party bands, will be kicking off on the Denny Street Stage from 5pm on New Year’s Eve for a two hour ‘throwback tunes’ show with the best of 80’s and 90’s party music to entertain the crowd, with the annual Fireworks show blasting off at 6pm sharp. After the fireworks, make sure to come in and join us here in The Grand where we will be ringing in 2020 in our infamous nightclub!

1. Tralee Snow Day!

We were purposely saving this one for last as it is set to be massive hit amongst everyone in Tralee. Tralee Chamber Alliance are bringing a ‘Snow Day’ to the square on Saturday 14th of December, with some festive foods, treats, Christmas characters, Carol Singers, Siamsa Tire performers and of course giant snow machines! The event is expected to attract families from all over Kerry and wider afield to Tralee to enjoy the snow day, and atmosphere in the local shops, and the organisers are encouraging people to come at anytime throughout the day as the event will be on from 12noon to 6pm. Peter Kelly’s (aka Franc) team from ‘Snow Ireland’ are also being brought in for one-day only to create a winter wonderland in the town square. And don’t forget to pop over to The Grand afterwards to warm up with one of our signature coffees or hot chocolates!

All in all, this December looks to be jam-packed with cheery Christmas fun! What are you most excited for? And don’t forget, if you are coming to Tralee over Christmas, look no further than us here at The Grand in the heart of Tralee for your accommodation. Call us today to find out our holiday rates!

Tralee’s Christmas Season has arrived!

It’s almost that time of year again! The Christmas Season is making it’s way to Tralee and will make its official landing on next weekend with the infamous tradition of the town’s lights being turned on!

The Tralee Christmas lights in Tralee on Saturday.

Join the festivities of the official start to Christmas in Tralee on Saturday November 30th in the Square where the Mayor of Tralee and guests will be turning on the Christmas lights for the festive season ahead. There will be live music and giveaways from 4.30pm so come down early and soak up the atmosphere! Afterwards, make your way over to us here at The Grand and cosy up by our open fires and peruse our delectable dinner menu. We will also have live music in our Pikeman Bar so the festive night doesn’t have to end at dinner!

Of course, once the lights have been turned on, there will be countless yuletide events going on around Tralee! One close to our very doors, is the annual Festive Hall at the Tralee Museum – a seasonal event not to be missed! The Festive Hall will provide it’s visitors with a delightful, fun-filled experience the whole family will enjoy. A host of cheery characters will come to life from Christmas tales old and new, to take you on an enchanting tour of the magical hall. There will be lots of fun and games with the tour guides as they escort you to meet the main man himself, Mr Santa Claus. And Santa, of course, will have a little gift for every child that comes to see him and likes nothing better than posing for photos with his visitors.

Now, of course, Christmas isn’t just for us humans! Treat your little canine companion to some festive cheer with a visit to Mr. Santa Paws! That’s right, Santa Paws is coming to McGrath vets on December 5th from 6pm-10pm. Hosted by Animal Help Net Kerry, this Christmas party night and fundraiser at McGrath Vets, Market Lane will bring a little holiday spirit to every visitor. Santa himself will be in residence to meet all dogs along with lots of Chrismassy refreshments and goody bags.

Last but certainly not least, is one more side of Christmas we haven’t spoken about… Christmas Parties! This year, for your Christmas party, look no further than us here at The Grand! With a superb selection of menus that will have something to suit everyone, relax in our renowned Samuel’s restaurant with a mouth-watering gourmet meal. After your dinner, take a trip into our acclaimed Pikeman bar where you can peruse our exquisite cocktail menu and enjoy live music every weekend!

Not to be forgotten is the return of Tralee’s very own Winter Wonderland, i.e. The Grand’s Christmas Nightclub! The highly-anticipated return date is the 7th of December, and to really make it a merry Christmas, we will have the fantastic Comic Book Heroes performing live on the 7th and 14th!

All in all, we think this years Christmas is shaping up to be one of the best and most festive Tralee has ever seen! Are you as excited as we are??

Pre-Auths: What exactly are they?

When it comes to hotels and travelling, the words ‘pre-auth’ are being thrown about more and more. Pre-auths are fast becoming a common practise across Europe and especially in Ireland. But what exactly are they? We will answer the most common questions guests have about the subject right here.

So we’ll start with the main one; What is a pre-authorization (pre-auth)?

  • A pre-authorization is simply a temporary hold placed by the hotel on your debit/credit card. This hold normally lasts about 5 days. During these 5 days, the card holder won’t be able to use these funds. When the time comes, usually on check-out, the pre-auth is either completed or reversed. Completed means it has been turned into a charge and the funds have now left your account, cancelled means the funds have been freed back into your account again.

When are pre-auths used?

  • Hotels and car rental agencies are the primary industries where pre-auths are used. For hotels, a pre-auth allows them to hold funds for payment until the guests check-out, it also enables the guest to put extra charges on the room. It is worth noting that if a guest pays at check in and pays for food etc as they go, this eliminates the need for a pre-auth!

What is the process involved in a pre-auth?

  • There are 3 quick steps involved in the pre-auth process. First, the hotel sends a request to the card holder’s bank, asking to hold a certain amount in funds. Second, the bank either allows or disallows this request. (If it is disallowed, this means that there aren’t enough available funds on the card). Once allowed, the funds are placed in a virtual ice block and are frozen. Then the third, and final step, happens at check-out, the pre-auth is either completed or reversed. In addition, it is important to note that the funds are held by the card holder’s bank, not the hotel. If, and only if, the pre-auth is completed, does the hotel receive payment.

If I pay with cash or with a different card, when do I get the pre-auth funds back?

  • This can vary depending on what bank you are with but the average waiting time is around 5-7 working days. If you do not see the funds back in your account after 10 days, we recommend that you contact your bank as the hotel no longer has a hold on your card.

We hope this post helped answer any questions you had on the subject of pre-auths but if there is anything you are unsure of, comment and let us know! 🙂

Tralee Circus Festival 2019

As you may know, Tralee will play host to this years Circus Festival from the 15th to 17th of November! I will first mention that if you are travelling to Tralee for the festival, consider us here at The Grand for your accommodation! We have special rates of €60 for a single room B&B, €100 for a double or twin room B&B and a student rated triple room for €135 B&B!

Now, as mentioned, the festival is running from the 15th to 17th November and these are shaping up to be some jam packed days! On the 15th, head down to the KDYS Centre (which, incidentally, is only a 30 second walk from The Grand’s front door!) to attend the Circus Convention Hall. This will be running from 10am to 7pm and there will be plenty to see and do, including workshops on things like juggling and prop work. Also, in the Tralee Gymnasium Hall from 10am to 7pm, there will be an Aerial and Acro Convention Hall. As hinted by the name, this convention will be providing fun workshops and training routines for aerial and acrobatics.

And not to be forgotten, the Tralee Gymnastics Hall will play host to a very special event from 1pm to 4:30pm. There will be a masterclass in Creative Tumbling with Nat Whittingham! Nat is a circus artist, acrobat and teacher from Cambridgeshire. He teaches internationally under the name Moving Through Acrobatics, and has in recent times, been focusing on solo acrobatics, fusing traditional gymnastics, contemporary floorwork and acrobatic research. If you would like to get in touch with Nat about his masterclass, pop an email to hnrkgard@gmail.com.

Saturday the 16th is just as action packed as Friday too, with the identical events running at the same times in the same places. However, on Saturday there will also be some kids workshops hosted! Kids aged 6-9 years can enjoy a fun-filled hour in the KDYS centre from 11am-12pm in which they will get the chance to learn how to spin plates and juggle! There will then be a second workshop hosted for kids aged 10 and over from 12pm-1pm, again in the KDYS centre.

Last but certainly not least, Sunday the 17th will be an exact replica of Saturday apart from one special addition; the Festival Parade! We can also provide an exciting update on this years parade, the Circus Festival are inviting the people of Tralee to come and join in the parade! So don’t get rid of that Halloween make-up just yet! And after the parade, make sure to give the perfect day the perfect end with Tralee’s best lunch here at The Grand!

Will you be attending the festival or any workshops? Comment and let us know!

Until next week!

Welcome!

First of all, hello to anyone reading!

The Grand Hotel Tralee has decided to launch this blog with the intention of highlighting all the wonderful aspects and goings-on of Tralee. By tuning in here every week, you will see posts relating to the latest buzz around the town and what’s going on here in The Grand itself!

Even this past week has been wonderfully busy! Here in The Grand, we had our infamous reopening of our Halloween Nightclub, which, as always went down a huge treat with attendees. And since it was a Bank Holiday weekend, we had not one, not two but THREE nights of live music right here in the Pikeman bar. We welcomed David O’ Leary, Fergus O’ Sullivan and Autumn Wind.

So keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram pages to see when a new post goes up. There will be a post going up later this week about the Circus Festival which is promising to be a big hit this year!

And don’t forget, we always welcome guest and customer input here at The Grand so please don’t be shy of commenting or sharing or even getting in touch with ideas of your own!
